Auckland Racing Club is one of the most reputed racing clubs in New Zealand and in Oceania. The Ellerslie racecourse at the club hosts races featuring the best thoroughbred horses in the country.
The racecourse is located at 100, Ascot Avenue in the Remuera area of Auckland. Cornwall Park, Greenlane train stop, Peach Parade, ASB Showgrounds, Mercy Ascot Hospital, Waiatarua Reserve, Pop-up Globe, Novotel Hotel are some of the landmarks in the area.
The club can be reached using the Great South Road, Southern Motorway and Campbell Road. The club has provision for car parking for members, though there may be some restrictions on overnight parking in some areas. About the Auckland Racing Club @ Ellerslie Racecourse
The Ellerslie track is a 1876m right handed track with a 382m length straight located just a 20 minute drive south from Auckland CBD. The racing club was founded on January 9, 1874 by the merger of the Auckland Jockey Club and the Auckland Turf Club.
The Jockey club had started horse racing at the Epsom Racecourse at Epsom Downs, three miles from the city on January 5, 1842. The Auckland Town Plate and Valapraiso Stakes Handicaps were some of the first races and they were held annually. The turf club held only a few races before it was merged.
The first races of the club were held on May 25, 26, 1874 since May 25 was the birthday of Queen Victoria at Ellerslie. Horse racing had already started at Ellerslie since 1857. Since then the Ellerslie racecourse has evolved to become one of the finest racecourses in the world, comparable to the best racecourses in the world, in Great Britain, Australia, United States.
Events of Note at Ellerslie Racecourse
A large number of feature and other horse races are held at the racecourse. The NZB Karaka Millions over a distance of 1200 meters and Karaka Million 3YO classic over a distance of 1600 meters held on January 26 are the races with the maximum amount of prize money, as each of races have one million dollars at stake. The Barfoot & Thomson Auckland Cup with $500,000 prize money over a distance of 3200 m on March 9, is another one of the top races that is on the event calendar.
There are a large number of features races with prize money of $50,000 each, and there are some feature races with more prize money ranging from $70,000 to $200,00 each. Most of these races are run over a distance of up to 3000 m. Irvines Great Northern Steeplechase is run over a distance of 6400 m and has a prize money of $125,000 on September 9, 2019. On the same day, the Schweppes Great Northern Hurdles, a hurdles race for horses is held over a distance of 4190 meters, with a prize money of $125,000. There are other hurdles and steeplechases also. Many races are held all year round including Boxing Day and New Years day.

The club has a dress code which is strictly enforced and access is only allowed to those who comply with the dress code.
General Admission areas – Ellerslie (Public) Stand & public lawn zones inclusive of the Infield Family Entertainment areas
No specific dress code is enforced in the general admission areas, tidy dress is expected though so use your common sense.
On big events like the Karaka Million, Auckland Cup Week events and on the Melbourne Cup Day etc, visitors in the general admission areas are encouraged, but not required, to wear race day attire i.e. suits, posh dresses and fancy hats.
Dress to Impress Dress Code
The Ascot (Members) Stand and Hospitality areas have a high standard of dress codes as opposed to general admission areas. These dress codes include the likes of no shorts, singlets, jandals or collarless shirts will be allowed entry. The club has a wide range of membership options based on the profile, age and other details of the member. The standard membership fee of the club is $220 per year For younger members of the club of age between 18 to 35, the membership fee is lower at $110 per year. Senior members above the age of 65 who have been members of the club for more than 20 years are eligible for a discounted fee of $145.
Similarly overseas members have to pay $145, and guest passes are available for $98 annually.The members are eligible for a number of privileges like free access to the race course, free racebook, 10% discount on hospitality packages and voting privileges.
The club can be hired for holding small events as well as larger corporate gatherings. It is located in central Auckland, close to the motorways and Auckland airport. The events can be held indoors or outdoors as required. The club has free parking for the event, and has all modern amenities.
It has a total of 22 rooms which can be hired for functions on non racing days. In house catering can also be arranged. For all events, an account manager will be provided to you, who will make the necessary arrangements so your event goes off perfectly. The club has a four star Novotel hotel close by (5 minute walk) with 247 rooms on its premises.
