History of the club
The Levin Cosmopolitan Club was founded way back in January 1900. It was created by a group of gentlemen who wanted to play darts in a local hotel but were not allowed too partake their. Hence, they decided to create their own club (as you would) and the rest is well as they say history.
Initially, it was known as the Horowhenua club. Since it was located at the back of the Levin Hotel, its founders borrowed the name and the club was renamed the Levin Workingmen’s Club from 1916 to 1929.
In the 1930s, it was known simply as the Cosmopolitan Club. However, it was christened with its current name in the 1950s. The club moved to its current location at the Southern end of Oxford Street in the 1970s. Here, it has expanded its premises so as to accommodate a membership of 1,800 or so members.
