Victoria Arms Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Cromwell in New Zealand and a top spot for some drinks, eats and pokies playing in the Cromwell area. The hotel was constructed in the year 1863 by Mrs. A. Box who ran it for 14 years. She then sold it to Mr James Stuart who ran the hotel until his death. His wife then took over the hotel and operated it quite successfully.

There were as many as eight hotels in the Cromwell area a century ago, and due to the competition only the best of the best survived. Due to the construction of the Clyde dam, the remaining hotels were submerged.

About the Victoria Arms Hotel 

In the 1960’s , New Zealand Breweries renamed the Victoria Hotel as Victoria Arms Hotel. The hotel has provided boarding, lodging, food and refreshments for 150 years.

The hotel continues to offer lodging to visitors to the Old Cromwell area. It is located at 65, Melmore Terrace, Cromwell in New Zealand, near the Kawarau River. Inniscourt street, Erris street and Donegal street are some of the roads in the area.

From Wednesday to Thursday, the hotel is open from 11 am to late at night, while on Monday and Tuesday, it is open a few hours later, though it closes at the same time. The hotel has a Karaoke night every Thursday from 8 pm onward. Music bands are also performing at hotel for customers on a regular basis who enjoy the live music.

Menu and Eats of Note

The hotel has a fairly extensive takeout menu for customers who wish to eat elsewhere. The pizzas are all priced at $20, and there are three options Moroccan lamb, BBQ chicken, Italian. The beef and chicken burgers are costing $16 each. Other dishes available are plain sausages, battered sausages, fries, seafood basket, orange roughy fillet, hoki fillet, prawn twister.

Bottled soft drinks like Coca Cola and water are also available for $5 and $4 each respectively. Halo coffee is priced at just $5. Thickshakes are available in caramel, strawberry and chocolate flavors at times.

The breakfast menu includes Vic’s breakfast with bacon, egg, sausage, tomato, mushroom. One of the specialities of the food at the hotel is that it is stone grilled. Other dishes on the menu are works burger, fish and chips, seafood chowder, roast of the day, Bangers and mash, peas, pie mud and sticky ribs.

These items are available from Thursday to Saturday from 11.30 am onward. There special offers on various days of the week. On Monday, Fish and chips are available for $20, and on Wednesday stone grill steak, eggs and chips are priced at only $20 as part of the special offer.

Happy Hour and Sports Watching

There is happy hour from 4 pm to 6 pm daily and customers can enjoy drinks at a discounted rate. There are a number of televisions installed, for watching live sport matches like rugby and NRL matches and horse racing on Melbourne cup day and for other big New Zealand horse race events. Make sure you check out the Karaoke nights as they are great fun for all.
