Cambridge Raceway Waikato Guide

The Cambridge Raceway is one of a few raceways which combines both harness and greyhound racing into the one venue. The raceway was founded nearly one century ago, as a trotting club and has become popular for the greyhound and harness racing in the Waikato area of New Zealand. The raceway is located at Hall Street Cambridge 3434 Waikato, adjacent to Taylor Street. Some of the roads in the vicinity are Victoria Road, Vogel street, Grey street, Everest lane. Landmarks in the area are the Clubhouse Sports bar, Hautapu Rugby Club and Aotea Rose essence.

About the Cambridge Raceway 

The Raceway is the home of the Waikato- bay of Plenty (abbreviated as BOP) Harness racing club. Typically 22 to 24 races harness races are scheduled in a year at the racecourse. The racing season starts from 1st August each year and ends on 31st July the next year. Additionally there are approximately 39 greyhound race meetings which are scheduled at the racecourse in a year, and six dual code meetings. The Harness Jewels is the top rated event at the raceway, and is held once every two years. The Group 1 event has prize money of $1.2 million and is run over a distance of 1609 metres.

The races are run over different distances depending on the event type. Some of the distances for which races are held are one mile, 1700 metres, 2200 metres, 2600 metres, 2700 metres, 3200 metres. The time taken for each race is measured, and the course records are updated at the website.

The timings for 400 m and 800 m sectionals and timings for two and three year olds are also recorded separately. All records are divided into the pacers section and trotters section, with timings for mobile start and standing start being specified separately. Venue Hire for Functions / Events

All the venues at the raceway can be hired for internal and external functions for business and individuals, especially when events are not being held. Some of the events which may be organized are company AGMs, Christmas parties, weddings, school balls, awards evenings and team building activities. There is a daily delegate package also offered. The events can be held at day or night and the bar tab is valid only for that day. For larger events, with a minimum of fifty guests, a $300 bar tab is offered as an incentive, if the full deposit amount is paid.

Skyline lounge, the Luxury Liner Diner and coffee are some of the facilities at the raceway offering food and beverages for race night dining. The Skyline lounge offers an excellent view of the racing area. It has a fully stocked bar, TV monitors for watching the event closely, full TAB facilities for those who enjoy sports betting, and high quality dining. Some of the meals offered are beef sirloin, fish cakes, lamb burger, roasted artichokes. Sides are chips & aioli, chicken liver, garlic bread. Desserts include chocolate berry tart ice cream, brownie butter scotch ice cream, red velvet cake, pineapple cake.

The Luxury liner diner offers a range of fast food for the race-day. The food available includes tasty burgers, hot dogs, chips, sausage rolls, home made treats, toasted sandwich beef, Hawaiian and bacon burger. They also have a coffee hut, where visitors can get black, white, hot chocolate coffee. Additionally chai, tea, soft drinks and milkshakes are also available. The milkshakes which are priced at $6, are available in the following flavors creaming soda, lime chocolate, caramel, strawberry and bananas. Visitors can also bring food from home and have a picnic on the lawns of Cambridge Raceway, for children and others, while the adults can watch the races.
