The Avondale Jockey Club abbreviated as AJC was formed more than a century ago in 1889 when the Avondale was just a farm settlement in the rural area adjoining Auckland. Horse races were held in the district in the Henderson area in 1864. The racecourse was originally located on the farm of Moss David, and to cater to the large number of people visiting the racecourse, a number of other facilities like the barber’ shop, butcher, grocery shop, billiards were developed. The first race was held on 26 April 1890. Till 2017, the racecourse was used as a training facility for horse owners.

About the Avondale Jockey Club

The Avondale Race Course is located at 22 Elm Street in the Avondale area of Auckland the capital of New Zealand. There is alternate way to access the Racecourse through Ash Street, which is the main road. There are a number of landmarks like the Salvation Army, Avondale library, Spice world, west liquor and Avondale school in the vicinity. Crayford street west is also close to the race course.

There is a car parking facility for visitors to the race course in the Members area they can enter the race course through Elm Street via Rosebank road.The racecourse is at the junction of Ash street and Rosebank Road. There is separate parking for horse floats, grooms, jockeys, and for the race spectators. The racecourse can be reached by train, since it is walking distance from Avondale station and using buses on the West Auckland route.

The main racecourse at Avondale is a 1800 meter long right handed course, with a 450 m straight end. The racecourse has a racing surface which is made from high quality turf. For the annual racing calendar of 2019-2020, which starts in July 2019 and ends in July 2020, there are a total of nine race meetings which are scheduled. Special races are scheduled on Anzac Day Holiday in April. The Avondale Cup and the Avondale Guinness are some of the major races which are run at the racecourse. There are no stables for the horses at the racecourse from what we noted.

Eats and Drinks Menu

The racecourse has catering facilities at the Tulloch cafe, first floor, owners and trainers stand, which are open to the public, There are also food and coffee caravans at the racecourse. The Marshall stand has a bar at the ground floor, while the upper floor has a bar and servery. On days when race meetings are not scheduled, the facilities at the racecourse can be hired for functions. Either the ground floor or the upper floor of the Marshall Stand or both can be hired for any function, by contacting the staff of the racecourse. The club is also used for holding various local events like festivals, picnics, fairs, carnivals, sales.

Other Happenings at The Course

To help the local community the club offers its facilities to the local community in the Avondale area on days when race meetings are not held. The popular Avondale Sunday Market is held at the club every Sunday. The club also hosts the Avondale House and the Henderson Pigeon racing club. The land is also leased to the Auckland Council for a period of 25 years since 1952, and is used for a variety of sporting activities.

The club area has eight rugby fields and two soccer fields for local sportsmen to practice their skills. These fields are usually open from 10 am in the morning daily. Other sports which can be played at the club are cricket and athletics.

Membership Benefits

The club accepts members and supporters, and a form has to be filled to apply for membership. The club also has life members who are listed at the website. For fundraising the club is running a Supporters club, with membership of the club costing $ 200. Food and beverages are provided to all those who purchase a ticket and a draw of lots is held at the end of the race day. 10 winners who have purchased a ticket will win race day packages which cost $750 + GST. Each of the winners will be allowed to name a race after themselves or their business.

They will also be featured in the race book advertising and signage on the racecourse. They will be given vouchers, which enable them to get three other friends to the racecourse for meals and drinks after the race. They will also be allowed to present the prize to winners. The overall winner of the ticket draw, will be entitled to a holiday at the Gold Coast, which includes air tickets.
